Ice and water mystery

Post by Sir William » Mon Nov 09, 2020 9:07 pm

Suppose I fill a glass full to the brim with water (just suppose it for the nonce) and I add some ice cubes to it. They will, of course, partially float on the surface of the water with 1/3rd of them sticking out the top, and the displaced water will overflow.

What I must now know from members is what will happen to the water level when the ice melts? Will it stay the same or will the glass overflow? :magnify:

I think you can safely assume that the level won't go down. (or can you?)

Why would you be giving a glass of iced water to a nonce? :hscratch:
