Sodder

Post by Sir William » Sat Sep 17, 2022 1:58 pm

Start here...

I mistakenly watched a video today where a Yank (an American gentleman) was soldering some wires together. I was very puzzled because he kept saying "Soddering" instead of "Soldering".

I thought he was just a pillock. But then I watched (mistakenly) a few more videos about soldering and I was shocked to hear that all the American ones seemed to say "Sodder" and "Soddering" and "Soddering iron".

(Check this out for your selfs)

This didn't manufacture any sense. WTFs going on? :search:

Apart from other more dubious connotations, I thought that a "Sodder" was somebody who laid turf. :hscratch:

Anyway, I checked this out on some English websites (websites about English) and it seems that the L is silent in the US and "Sodder" is the usual American pronounciation of Solder. Some even say that "Sodder" is the correct pronounciation and us Brits have of gotte*n it wrong.

Have I ever heard anything so ridiculous as that? :o

You must tell me what your thoughts are about this very important matter. :wag:

No, we are not sodders.

(If "Solder" is "Sodder", I wonder how they pronounce "Soldier). :hscratch:
